Most CCTV recording problems are not mysterious. They fall into a handful of groups. This guide helps you narrow the cause quickly. For the step-by-step recorder menus, see our help centre article.
Quick checks (two minutes)
- Is the recorder on and showing live video?
- Does the screen show a red recording indicator on each camera?
- Is the date and time correct?
- In the storage menu, does the hard disk show Normal, and is there free space or overwrite on?
If the disk is missing, shows error, or capacity is zero, go to the disk section.
By symptom
No disk or "HDD error"
The disk has failed, loosened or is not detected. Surveillance disks wear out, especially in hot rooms. Replace with a surveillance-grade disk and ensure ventilation. See how to install a hard disk in a DVR or NVR.
Disk full and recording stopped
Overwrite is switched off, so the recorder stops when full. Turn overwrite on, but also check whether the disk is big enough for the days you need: storage calculator.
Recording only on motion
The schedule is set to motion or event recording. Change it to continuous for important cameras, and review sensitivity.
One camera missing
If one camera shows no picture, the problem is the camera, its cable, the PoE port or its power. See CCTV black screen.
Gaps after power cuts
A sudden power loss can corrupt a disk or leave the recorder in a bad state. A UPS prevents this. Check the disk health and repair or replace it.
Wrong time, so footage "disappears"
If the clock is wrong, footage exists but under different dates. Set the correct time zone (UAE is GMT+4) and automatic time.
Everything recorded but footage looks blank or blurry
That is a camera issue rather than recording. See blurry or pixelated picture.
Decision table
| What you see | Most likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| HDD error | Disk failed | Replace disk |
| Disk full, not recording | Overwrite off | Turn on overwrite |
| Records only after movement | Motion schedule | Set continuous |
| One camera blank | Cable or power | Check PoE port or cable |
| Gaps after cuts | No UPS | Add UPS, check disk |
| Dates wrong | Clock | Set time |
Why you should not wait for the problem
The worst time to find a recording fault is after an incident. Check once a month: play back yesterday's footage from every camera. Many businesses are expected to maintain a log. For regulated premises, see SIRA CCTV requirements.
When to call an engineer
- The disk makes clicking noises
- The recorder reboots repeatedly
- Several cameras fail together
- You cannot log in

Conclusion
Disk, schedule, power and clock cause most cases. Check them first, and test playback monthly so you find problems before they matter.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my CCTV record only some days?
Usually the schedule is set to motion only, the disk is failing, or the recorder restarts after power cuts. Check the recording schedule and the disk status.
Can I recover footage from a failed hard disk?
Sometimes a specialist can, but it is not guaranteed. Stop using the disk and avoid repeatedly powering it on.
