Quick answer

Blocky, pixelated video on your phone is usually a slow internet connection, so switch the app to a lower-quality stream. A blurry or hazy picture on the recorder is usually a dirty lens or dome, spider webs, focus, or infrared reflecting at night. Clean first, then check the settings.

A camera that recorded a sharp picture on day one can look terrible a year later. The good news: most causes are cleaning or a setting, not a broken camera.

Blocky or "mosaic" picture on your phone

That blocky, smeared look (called mosaic or pixelation) usually comes from the internet connection, not the camera.

  • In the Hik-Connect app (and most others), switch live view from HD to SD or Fluent. This uses the camera's lighter sub-stream.
  • Check the property's upload speed. Remote viewing depends on upload, which is often much lower than download on home plans.
  • Watching many cameras at once on mobile data makes it worse. Open one camera at a time.

If the picture is also blocky on the monitor at the recorder, the camera's bitrate may be set too low. Raise it a little in the camera's video settings (it uses more disk space).

Blurry or soft picture

  1. Dirty lens or dome. UAE dust builds up fast. Wipe gently with a microfibre cloth, never a rough paper towel, which scratches.
  2. Spider webs. Clear webs from the lens and the bracket, especially on cameras with infrared.
  3. Focus. Varifocal cameras can drift after a knock. Many have motorised focus you can adjust from the recorder; fixed lenses can't be refocused.
  4. Wrong lens for the distance. A wide-angle camera can't show a face 20 metres away. That needs a different lens, not a setting.

Hazy, white or washed-out at night

  • IR reflection. The camera's infrared bounces off a nearby wall, eave or a dirty dome cover and floods the picture. Angle the camera away from close surfaces, and clean the dome inside and out.
  • Condensation. Cold AC air meeting humid outdoor air can fog the inside of a camera housing. A camera that fogs every morning may need resealing or replacing.

Too dark or too bright faces at doors

  • People standing against a bright doorway look like dark shapes. Turn on WDR (wide dynamic range) or BLC (backlight compensation) in the camera's image settings.
  • Car headlights blinding a camera at night: try HLC (highlight compensation).

Quick settings checklist

  1. Image: WDR on for doorways and glass entrances.
  2. Video: main stream at the camera's full resolution with a sensible bitrate.
  3. Phone app: SD or Fluent for remote viewing on a slow connection.
  4. Night: IR on, smart IR on if available, and nothing reflective near the lens.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 4K camera fix a blurry picture?

Not if the cause is dirt, focus, reflection or a slow connection. Fix those first. If the picture is clean and still lacks detail at the distance you need, then a higher resolution or longer lens helps.

Why is my picture fine live but blurry in playback?

Playback on a phone often uses the sub-stream to save data. Download the clip on the recorder or in the app at full quality to see the real detail.

Can you clean and adjust all our cameras?

Yes. We can clean, refocus and check the settings of every camera in one visit, or include it in a maintenance contract.
