Quick answer

They work well for sites with no electricity or internet, such as farms, construction sites and desert chalets. Each camera needs a data SIM and decent 4G signal. The catches in the UAE are heat (mount them in shade), dust on the solar panel, and that many models record only on motion, not 24/7.

A normal CCTV system needs three things: power, a network cable and a recorder. On a farm in Al Dhaid, a plot under construction or a chalet out in the desert, you often have none of them. That's where 4G solar cameras come in.

How they work

  • A solar panel charges a battery built into (or attached to) the camera.
  • A SIM card with a data plan connects it to the internet over 4G, the same way your phone does.
  • Video is saved on a microSD card inside the camera. Some brands also offer cloud storage.
  • You watch live, get alerts and play back clips in the brand's phone app.

No cables, no recorder, and you can move the camera to another site later.

Where they make sense

  • Farms and livestock pens far from the main house
  • Construction sites before permanent power arrives
  • Chalets, rest houses and weekend properties
  • Temporary storage yards, car parks and site cabins
  • Remote gates and boundary fences

The UAE problems nobody mentions in the advert

Heat. Many 4G solar cameras are rated to around 55°C. A camera in direct summer sun, on a metal pole, can get hotter than that. Batteries and SD cards fail early when they cook. Mount the camera under an eave or a small sun shield and point the panel, not the camera, at the sun.

Dust and sand. A dusty panel can lose much of its charging power. After a sandstorm or every couple of weeks in summer, wipe it with a soft damp cloth.

Signal. Check 4G coverage at the exact mounting point. If the signal is weak, a camera with an external antenna, or mounting it a few metres higher, often fixes it.

Recording mode. Many models only record when they detect motion, to save battery. That's fine for alerts, but it is not 24/7 footage. Bigger battery models can record continuously; check before you buy.

Data use. Recording to the SD card uses no data. Watching live and playing back remotely does. Watching a lot of live video will use up your data plan quickly, so pick a plan with some headroom.

They are not a replacement for an approved system

If your business needs a Sharjah Police or SIRA approved system, a 4G solar camera on its own won't meet the requirements for continuous recording, retention and central storage. Use it for remote corners, temporary sites and early alerts, alongside a proper wired system where one is required.

Quick checklist before you buy

  1. Is 4G signal good at the mounting spot?
  2. Can it be mounted in shade with the panel in sun?
  3. Does it need continuous recording, or are motion clips enough?
  4. Who will wipe the panel and check it monthly?
  5. Which SIM and data plan will it use?

Frequently asked questions

Which SIM card do I need?

A data SIM from e& or du works with most cameras sold in the UAE. Check that the camera supports the local 4G bands before buying online from abroad.

How long does the battery last without sun?

It depends on the model and settings. Larger battery models can run for weeks on stored charge, but in the UAE the bigger issue is usually too much heat, not too little sun.

Can thieves just steal the camera?

They can try. Mount it high, use tamper alerts and a security screw kit, and position a second camera to watch the first if the site is high risk.
