How to program a new remote for your automatic gate

First, a safety note

The gate's control box carries mains electricity (220–240 V). You only need to press a small button inside it. Do not touch the wires or terminals, and keep children and cars away from the gate while you test it. If you are not comfortable opening the box, call us.

Step 1: Find the receiver

The receiver is the part that listens for the remote. It is usually:

• on the control board inside the gate motor's cover, or
• a small separate box near the gate or on the wall, with a short wire aerial.

Look for a small button marked LEARN, PROG, SW, P1 or similar, next to a small light (LED).

Step 2: Add the remote

1. Press and release the LEARN / PROG button once. The LED comes on.
2. Within about 10 seconds, press and hold the button on the new remote that you want to open the gate.
3. The LED flashes or goes off. That means the remote is saved.
4. Step back 5 to 10 metres and test it.

Some brands work differently: you may need to hold the button for a few seconds, or you can add a new remote using an existing working remote with a special button sequence. Your motor's manual gives the exact steps for that brand.

Why the remote will not learn

• Wrong frequency: most gates in the UAE use 433 MHz, but some use 868 MHz. The remote must match the receiver.
• Rolling code vs fixed code: secure "rolling code" receivers only accept remotes of the same brand and type. Cheap universal or copy remotes often fail on these.
• Flat battery: a new-looking remote can still have a weak battery. Replace it and try again.
• Memory full: receivers store a limited number of remotes. Old ones may need deleting.

Lost or stolen remote?

Anyone who finds it can open your gate. Delete all remotes from the receiver (usually by holding the LEARN button for around 10 seconds, but check your manual, as this varies by brand), then add back only the remotes you still have.

When to call a technician

• The gate opens with the button on the motor but not with any remote.
• The gate starts, stops halfway or reverses on its own. See gate automation problems.
• You want to add a long-range reader, keypad or phone control.
