Quick answer

For offices and shops, either works, and fingerprint is usually cheaper. For construction, workshops, cleaning and kitchen staff, choose face recognition: worn, dusty or wet fingers cause failed punches. Many businesses now pick a machine that does both, plus a card as backup.

Both types do the same job: record who came in and when, so payroll is based on facts rather than a signing sheet. The right choice depends on who your staff are and what their hands do all day.

Side by side

Fingerprint Face recognition
Typical cost Lower Higher
Speed 1–2 seconds Under 1 second, hands free
Worn, dusty or wet fingers Often fails Not affected
Hygiene Everyone touches the sensor Touch-free
Bright sunlight Not affected Needs careful placement
Buddy punching Very hard Very hard (with live-face detection)
Best for Offices, shops, clinics Sites, workshops, kitchens, large teams

Who should choose fingerprint

  • Offices, showrooms and clinics with mostly desk-based staff
  • Small teams where budget matters most
  • Indoor entrances with no sun glare

Who should choose face recognition

  • Construction and labour staff. Hard work wears fingerprints down, and cement and dust make it worse. Failed punches lead to payroll arguments.
  • Kitchens, cleaning and maintenance teams, whose hands are often wet or gloved
  • Larger teams where a queue forms at shift start, because face punching is hands-free and fast
  • Anywhere you want a touch-free entrance

Why many businesses choose "both"

Most current machines combine face, fingerprint and card or PIN. Each employee uses whatever works for them, and the card is a backup when someone's finger or face won't read. It also lets the same machine open the door, so you get attendance and access control in one device.

Respecting staff privacy

Fingerprints and faces are sensitive personal data. Do it properly:

  • Tell staff in writing what is collected and why (attendance and payroll).
  • Keep the software and reports password-protected, with access only for HR.
  • Remove leavers' records when they leave.
  • Don't use attendance photos for anything else.

Things that matter more than the brand

  1. Software set up properly, with shifts, breaks, overtime rules and weekends, so reports are ready for payroll.
  2. Network connection, so data flows to the software automatically.
  3. A backup routine, so a broken machine doesn't wipe a month of records.

Frequently asked questions

Can staff cheat a face machine with a photo?

Modern machines use live-face detection that checks for a real 3D face, so a printed photo or phone screen won't work. Cheap or old models may be easier to fool.

Does face recognition work with masks or hijab?

Yes. Current models recognise faces with a headscarf, and many can recognise staff wearing a mask, as long as they are enrolled properly.

Can one machine cover two branches?

Each site needs its own machine, but all machines can report to the same software so HR sees every branch in one place.
