Many cameras have a built-in microphone; others need an external mic wired to the camera's audio-in. Then set the stream type to Video & Audio in the camera's video settings. Before you do, think about privacy: recording people's conversations without their knowledge can break UAE law.
Video shows what happened. Sound can show why. That's why shops, clinics and offices increasingly ask for audio at counters and receptions. Here's how it works, and where to be careful.
Does your camera already have a microphone?
- Many newer cameras have a built-in mic. Check the model's spec sheet for "built-in microphone" or "audio".
- Others have an audio-in port (sometimes a small cable tail) for an external microphone.
- Analogue HD cameras can carry audio over the coax cable on some models, if the DVR supports it.
Connecting an external microphone
- Choose a microphone made for CCTV, usually powered by 12 V.
- Connect its audio lead to the camera's audio-in and its power to a 12 V supply (some cameras supply it).
- Mount it close to where people speak: above a counter, not on a high ceiling.
Turning audio on (Hikvision)
- Open the camera's settings (from a browser, or through the recorder).
- Go to Configuration > Video/Audio.
- On the Video tab, set Stream Type to Video & Audio for the main stream.
- On the Audio tab, choose the right audio input (MicIn for a microphone, LineIn for an amplified source) and adjust the volume.
- Save, then check playback on the recorder with sound on.
The privacy part
UAE law treats recording other people's conversations without consent as a privacy violation (Article 44 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021, with heavy fines). In practice:
- Business counters and receptions: tell people with clear signage that audio is recorded.
- Staff areas: inform staff in writing, and never record break rooms or private spaces.
- Homes: keep audio off unless everyone recorded knows about it, including domestic staff and visitors.
- Never post recordings with voices online.
If audio isn't really needed, leave it off. Video is often enough.
Two-way audio is different
Some cameras and doorbells have a speaker as well, so you can talk to a visitor through the app. That's for live conversation, and is common on doorbells and gate intercoms.
Frequently asked questions
Does audio use much storage?
Very little compared with video. It won't noticeably change how many days you can record.
Why can't I hear anything in playback?
Check that the stream type is Video & Audio on the main stream, the right audio input is selected, and the volume isn't muted in the player.
Can I add audio to old analogue cameras?
Often yes, with a microphone wired to the DVR's audio inputs. We can check your DVR model.
